STATE OF COLOr III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Roy Romer, Governor ~~,
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlreotor
DATE: December 15, 1989
T0: Mike Long
FROM: Tony lJaldron~W
RE: Trapper 14ine, CMA Awards
Trapper Mine has received the nomination for honorable mention in the Large
Surface Mine Category. There are several reasons the Division believes
Trapper deserves recognition for this award including:
1. Continuing effort on the part of the operator to experiment with new
procedures to achieve reclamation requirements The most recent
example of this is an expanded version of no-seed plots in an attempt
to increase woody plant density.
2. Considerable effort and innovation in reconstructino drainage
channels to reduce downcutting and sediment loss while blending into
the post-mining topography. In conjunction with this, Trapper is
increasing the use of stock ponds and dozer basins across the
disturbed and reclaimed area thereby decreasing the amount of pond
cleaning required, while at the same time, increasing wildlife use
over a larger portion of the mine site.
3. The establishment of large (approximately 1 acrel transplanted shrub
clumps which help provide immediate cover for wildlife in reclaimed
areas.
4. Their environmental record demonstrates a willingness to remain in
compliance. They have not received a violation from the Division
since 1986.
5. Although Trapper reouests several revisions or modifications each
year, they are generally well planned and submitted far enough in
advance to work within the regulatory timeframes. They are also in a
format which is easily inserted into the existing permit application.
6. Trapper Mine has personnel actively involved with the Colorado Coal
Program through membership in the C.M.A.
The mine has been nominated for this award previously and received honorable
mention in 1988.
/7 ac
2242E
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
