CO 80203 <br />~r~~IVFD <br />AUG 2 7 1996 <br />i.4vicign of ivLn Orals $ G000(~V <br />RE: Mountain Coal Company; West Elk Mine; Permit No. C-80-007 <br />Dear Mr. Boulay: <br /> <br />As you requested during your last site inspection, the following explains the work Mountain Coal <br />Company (MCC) plans to undertake in order to stabilize C-1 conveyor (the conveyor from the <br />portals to the stack tubes). This work is needed to ensure that the conveyor remains stable, as the <br />hillside continues to move. <br />The work will be done at the concrete piers, which support the conveyor located above the main <br />mine access road. Four holes, 24 inches in diameter will be augered on the upslope (or south <br />side) of each of the piers. The holes will be approximately 30 feet deep or to bedrock, whichever <br />comes first. The holes will be filled with two pound, 13 psi polyurethane foam. <br />The foam is intended to absorb the pressure put on the conveyor supports from the moving <br />hillside. When the pressure collapses the foam, new holes will be drilled and they will be filled <br />with foam. Given the rate of movement that MCC has observed in the past, this work will <br />probably be completed every two years and would consider the work to be maintenance.
