O'Connor Reclamation Specialist Re: Marathon Gold Corporation Dear Mr. O'Connor: It is my understanding that in May of 1983 the Mined Land Reclamation Division issued a 112 Permit for the Marathon Gold Corporation. That permit should have covered an area of 160 acres located in Section 9, Township 9 North, Range 92 'Jest. Since that time, Marathon has apparently also been mining on other properties in Northwest Moffat County. Whether or not their permit was extended to cover those properties is not known. In any event, according to local news articles, it appears that Marathon may be in financial difficulty. Accordingly, local property owners who have been directly and adversely affected by the mining operation have inquired with this office as to how and when the reclamation of the disturbed land will take place. They are concerned that the company will fold and that they will be left with the mess. Their concern revolves around the two settling ponds that will need extensive reclamation efforts and the numerous pits that have been dug and left open. Some of the pits are as large as 900 feet by 150 feet and as deep as 100 feet. I would appreciate it if you would advise me at your earliest possible convenience as to how the Marathon Gold mining operation has been monitored to date, and how the required reclamation will be accomplished if, in fact, the company does go out of business.
