Walther
Executive Director
Mrchael B. Long
Divlvon Director
Please find one application for the 2002 Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation National
Award. This application was submitted to the Division of Minerals and Geology by Trapper Mining,
Inc. for their Trapper Mine in Colorado. Trapper Mining, Inc. submitted the application to the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology on January 31, 2002.
Trapper Mining, Inc. requested the Trapper Mine be considered for the National awazd category No. 2.
Although the mine is currently active, portions of the mine have been reclaimed for 20 years and are
eligible for final bond release. Trapper Mining, Inc. has implemented successful reclamation that
supports and has enhanced the post-mining land use. The portions of the Trapper Mine considered in
the application have post-mining land uses of Cropland (alfalfa/grass hay), and Rangeland and Wildlife
Habitat. Trapper Mining, Inc. has demonstrated that the reclaimed portions of the mine support these
post-mining land uses.
The Trapper Mine received an Excellence in Surface Mining Reclamation Award in 1990, and has
requested to be considered for the 25Anniversary of the Surface Mining Law Award.
The Division considers the reclamation achieved at the Trapper Mine deserving of national recognition,
and acknowledges Trapper Mining, Int.'s colrunitment to the environment and local community.
Thank you for your consideration,
Specialist
10/2002 OSM awazd.doc
]0-Trapper/2002 OSM awazd.doc
attachment
