Long
Platte Valley Pit, Permit No. M-89-120 ./ Division Director
Brighton Pit, Permit No. M-82-160
Dear Mr. Brancucci:
The Division of Minerals & Geology (Division) and the Office of the State Engineer (OSE) have begun an
investigation in response [o written complaints of possible adverse impacts to groundwater users in the
Brighton azea resulting from dry mining and dewatering activities a[ the Platte Valley Pit. Results from out
preliminazy field inspection of the Platte Valley Pit, Permit No. M-89-120, on May 30, 2002 indicate that a
follow-up inspection is needed to accurately determine the extent of pit disturbance and compliance with
the mine plan. The Division is tentatively planning a field inspection and survey for the week of June 10,
2002 in cooperation with representatives of the OSE. As a part of [he investigation, we request your
cooperation in including [he wells in question in our field survey. Also, we note [ha[ the Brighton Pit,
Permit No. M-82-160 is in close proximity to the Platte Valley Pit and is also permitted for dewatering and
dry mining activities. We are uncertain at this time as to the extent of mining disturbance and permit
compliance at the Brighton Pit. Therefore, we anticipate a field inspection of the Brighton Pit also during
the week of June 10, 2002. We would appreciate your cooperation as we proceed with our investigation
and will keep you apprised of our conclusions as they become available.
As discussed with you on May 30, 2002 the OSE will be evaluating the status of compliance of Aggregate
Industries, Inc. with OSE permitting requirements. We will also keep you apprised of the results of the
OSE investigation as [hey become available. Aggregate Industries, Inc. has also commissioned Bill
Warmack of the Applegate Group, Inc. to conduct a detailed groundwater investigation using modeling
techniques. We anticipate [he results of Mc Warmack's investigation within the next 4 to 6 weeks.
We will be contacting you soon [o schedule a day and time for a field survey of the wells in question.
Please call me at (303) 866-3567 if you have any questions. Once again, [hank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Thomas A.
