Gttany <br />To: DRMS Coal Staff Division Direcor <br />C <br />~ Natural Resource Trustee <br />From: Tom Kaldenbach <br />Re: Nomination of West E-k Mine for Reclamation Award <br />I nominate the West Elk Mine for a reclamation award for its innovative use of natural <br />materials for erosion control on a steep section of recently reclaimed U. S. Forest Service <br />road. The road had provided access to a remote portion of the mine where numerous <br />methane drainage wells had been drilled. Reclamation of the well sites and the road was <br />completed contemporaneously with well abandonment. Afrer the road was regraded, <br />topsoiled, seeded, and mulched, aspen trees that had been cut down when the road was <br />constructed were laid across the road as an additional erosion control measure and for <br />restricting access by motor vehicles (see photo, below).
