Box 187
Craig, Colorado 81626
Re: Trapper Mine Correspondences Regarding Proposed Topsoil Seed Mix
and 1986 Proposed Reclaimed Areas Seed Mix
File No.: C-010-81
Dear Mr. Humphries:
The Division has reviewed Trapper's request (dated December 18, 1984) to
include alfalfa in the seed mix for topsoil stockpiles and has the following
comments.
It is the Division's position that alfalfa should not be included in the
topsoil stockpile seed mix. It has never been demonstrated (per Rule 4.15.2)
that alfalfa, as an introduced species, is desirable and necessary to achieve
a quick, temporary, and stabilizing cover. In addition to alfalfa's potential
to produce bloat, it is a very competitive species, and dominance of alfalfa
would be expected on stockpiles seeded with it. Alfalfa is more properly
seeded in carefully managed pasture lands (where the Division has approved its
use in the past). Also, it does not appear as if alfalfa is particularly
adapted to the soil types at the Trapper Mine.
Proposed species to be seeded in 1986 were submitted in another correspondence
from Trapper, dated January 17, 1985. No problems were noted with the lists,
with the exception of alfalfa in the topsoil stockpile list (Table 3.6-11), as
discussed above.
If you have any questions or comments on this matter, do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Jo eph W.
