iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
PIONEER PARTNERS
P O BOX 616 /MEEKER CO 81641 / (31.03) 878-3372
~i-~-• . i 1 i!-r.
JUN z _: 1994
June 22, 1994 ":,,:..~~
Mined Land Reclamation Board
ATTN: Barbara Palaski
1313 Sherman Street, Room 723
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Northern #1 Coal Mine, Meeker, Colorado
As owners of the land where the Northern #1 Coal Mine was located, we
have some concerns regarding the reclamation. Some of the bonded area
has been released and there is a request for additional areas to be
released. One of our main concerns is the noxious weed problem which is
very serious in this area.
Over the years we have worked closely with the Rio Blanco County Weed
Department, and to a limited extent with Greg Lewicki, who is in charge
of reclamation for Northern, to control these noxious weeds. Northern had
a lease on all our property and conducted extensive drilling and surveys
for coal information, building roads, using existing roads, making
reservoirs, etc. The construction equipment that Northern used carried a
variety of noxious weed seeds that bedded and grew where the ground was
disturbed by Northern. That equipment brought us weeds we never had
before, such as Hounds Tongue and Knapweed.
Greg Lewicki's main concern has been the reclaimed area which is covered
by the bond, with very little, if any, concerns to other areas leased by
Northern where the equipment went and where weeds are now. We have
made weed control efforts in the reclaimed areas and are getting favorable
results. Therefore, we hope that Northern will continue to help us with
these problem areas, both in the reclaimed portions and the other areas of
concern and any assistance you might provide with Northern would be
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Phil Jensen
For Pioneer Partners
cc: Rio Blanco County Weed Department
