Notices of Intent (NOI) to resume <br />uranium mining operations in San Miguel County and Rule 7.2.2 Notification of <br />Designation or Pending Designation by Office <br />Deaz Mr. Berry: <br />INFORM is a state-wide nonprofit organization with the mission of <br />educating the public about the dangers that exist when unsafe and irresponsible <br />mining practices are permitted. Through the dissemination of information and <br />education, INFORM helps organize residents in local communities most <br />threatened by these practices to protect water quality, quality of life, and the local <br />economy. <br />We are awaze that on July 17, 2006, International Uranium (USA) Corp. <br />submitted a letter identifying their Notice of Intent to resume operations at six <br />uranium mine sites in San Miguel County, Colorado in the very near future <br />(attached). These mines aze the Sunday Mine (Permit No. M-1977-285), <br />Carnafion Mine (Permit No. M-1977-416), St. Jude Mine (Permit No. - 978- <br />039 HR), West Sunday Mine (Permit No. M-1981-021), and Topaz Mine (Permit <br />No. M-1980-055). <br />Consistent with past practice in other circumstances where mines were <br />proposed for reinitiation of mining after long periods of inactivity which predated <br />the substantial revisions to the Mined Land Reclamation Act in 1943, we assume <br />that DBMS will conduct a review of the proposed operations to assess compliance <br />with state reclamation laws. Specifically, these mines should be reviewed for <br />whether they constitute Designated Mining Operations (DMOs) pursuant to <br />Section 34-32-103(3.5) of the Mined Land Reclamation Act, as mines that either <br />use toxic or acidic chemicals in extractive metallurgical processing or where acid <br />ortoxic-forming chemicals will be exposed or disturbed as a result of mining <br />OperaUORS.
