III IIIIIIIIIIIII III ~ ~
REPORT CONCERNING THE EFFECTS OF UNDERGROUND COAL
MINING ON THE SOLITARIO RANCH WELL
Las Animas County, Colorado
January, 1995
Carlton E. Gerity P.E.
INTRODUCTION
This report is a summary of a review of information and evaluation concerning the
effects of underground coal mining at the Golden Eagle Mine of Basin Resources, on
:`~ the Tatum water well. It has been done at the request of Ann Tatum, owner. The
well is located on the north side of Highway 13 on the Solitario Ranch. The Solitario
Ranch is located in Las Animas County, Colorado, approximately 25 miles west of
Trinidad in the Weston, Colorado area. The Golden Eagle mine's incline and
operations area are located about 1.3 mi to the East.
As part of this evaluation, part of one day was spent reviewing the files at the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, and one day was spent in the field at the
site.
The concern is that the water table in the well has been lowered, and that this is the
result of either the installation of a ventilation shaft in the vicinity, or of
underground mining and caving just to the north, or of a combination of both.
CONCLUSION
The evaluation has been done using only data that is available to the public in
various files located in the State of Colorado, Department of Natural Resources, ~
Division of Minerals and Geology offices. _ 1'W
y~Gv,
The conclusion of this review is that it is row bable that underground longwall coal ~ r ~,
mining completed in the vicinity of the well would influence the water level in the ~1~
well.
STATE OF COLORADO, DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES,
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY, DENVER COLORADO
Time was spent at this state office to determine the extent of the operations of Basin
Resources at the Golden Eagle Mine, the mining plan of the company, and the
ground water hydrology presented as part of the Golden Eagle Mining permit, No.
C-81-013. From this file, copies were made of: the report, Response to Renew¢l
Stipulations 52 ¢nd 67 Prob¢ble Hydrologic Consequences of Mining; Map 17,
PIONEER ENGINEERING
