•
~ III IIIIIillllllllll
Jim McArdle
GEC Bid
Harry Ranney
I have reviewed the bid document and cross sections of the East Pit
submitted by Preston Meese. I have determined that his estimates
of earth work volumes to be moved to be relatively accurate and
that by using his methods of slope reduction, significant cut and
fill volumes can be reduced. By lowering the slope of the fill on
the East pit Drainage from 5~ to 3$ or less, a 120,00 BCY reduction
of cut and fill can be realized. The reduction of the slope also
eliminates the need to haul an additional 56,000 BCY of material
from the North End area. These coupled with the slope configuration
change at Chen's Hill, which can result in a net reduction of
approximately 50,000 BCY, reduce my original estimate of material
to be moved from 600,000 BCY to 374,000 BCY. Preston Meese's
estimate of material to be moved was around 325,000 BCY therefore
I believe his estimate to be valid.
I also reviewed his proposed equipment list and find that if he
encounters any construction delays, he will not be able to complete
the job on time. Therefore, I recommend he add an additional DS
Caterpillar crawler and one more scraper, preferably a 637 but
another 627 to compliment the one he has might be adequate.
One last item of concern is the amount of erosion mat and riprap
required at the south end of the East Pit. Preston's method of
reducing the quantity of material to be moved ended in reducing the
elevation of the south end of the pit by approximately 35-40 feet
thereby increasing the amount of erosion fabric required. However,
in my original estimate, I factored in a significant overage for
possibilities such as this, therefore, I do not believe any
additional material will be required.
It is my recommendation that the contract should be awarded to
Preston Meese if he can arrange to rent the additional equipment if
necessary.
