I am familiar with the area in question and I have just a
few concerns relating to this new refuse pond.
Based on the small size of this project, I feel there should
be no major impacts to local wildlife. Species that could be
impacted could include; prairie dogs, deer, elk, antelope, raptors,
rabbits, and possibly a few species I have not mentioned. If the
Deserado Mine continues to cooperate and consult with the BLM and
CDOW, impacts to wildlife should be minimized.
I received a copy of a prairie
Chervick, Environmental Coordinator
study Mr. Chervick showed the pre:
proposed development area. This stuc
existing prairie dog holes. Chervic
response from prairie dogs to recc
previously disturbed site (Refuse Are
a potential form of mitigation that
caused by the proposed refuse area #`.
prairie dog communities is related
reintroduction of Black Footed FerrE
is aware of the situation and
dog population study from Tim
for Western Fuels. In this
ence of prairie dogs in the
ly showed an 80% active rate on
k also stated that there is a
Ionization (64% active) of a
:a #1). This recolonization is
nay offset some of the impacts
My concern with the loss of
to the potential for future
ts. As long as Western Fuels
;omDlies with Section 7 in
association with the BLM there should be no major adverse affects
on the local prairie doq community. This study appears to fulfill
that requirement.
My other concern would be to protect the refuse area to
prevent wildlife, including big game, small game, raptors and T&E
species from encountering adverse affects associated with the new
refuse area. This practice appears to have worked in the past at
other sites on the Deserado Mine property. If the proper measures
are taken (ie.. fencing) where needed, this should minimize
negative affects.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Kenneth Salazar, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, William R.
