Stevens
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St, Room 215
Denver CO 80203
Dear Mr. Stevens:
November 22, 1994
DECEIVED
NOV 25 1994
Division of rvrrnera~s g Geology
I am writing about the United Companies amendment application for their Colona Pit in Montrose
County. As you know, United Companies plans to expand the Colona Pit, and because their
application was filed just 10 days before our much-needed new zoning law took effect (on Oct.
13, 1994) our county government does not have the opportunity to review and determine the
appropriateness of this proposed use.
If ever there was a gravel pit that needed public review, it is this one. As you probably know, the
pit and its proposed expansion sits next to the main highway just south of Montrose, and
everything is quite visible from the highway. The surrounding area is agricultural and residential,
and there are plenty of people concerned that the whole gravel pit is an eyesore and a nuisance in
such a location.
It is imperative that our local county government be given the chance to review United
Companies' planned expansion. Please consider the wishes of many concerned citizens and the
Montrose County Commissioners, and require United Companies to secure county approval
before granting them permission to expand the Colona Pit.
Sincerely,
~`"' '"
Steve Boyle
828 N 2nd

Montrose CO 81401
