• III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII i
999
..-~ .,-~
April 4, 1996
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Room 215
Denver_ Colorado 80203
Dear Sirs:
r-~Fr,~~v~D
APR 0 n 1996
Division of M~nerais & Geology
I'm writing in regards to the certified letter I received from United Companies, regarding
the proposed Gravel Pit described in the public notice article enclosed.
I'm very much opposed to the operation. I own 162 ace ranch on the West side of this
pit. I'm not sure why all the property owners in this area have to suffer, with constant
dust, heavy equipment, truck noise cost thur property taxes to maintain the county and
state highways that these truck ruin due to constant gravel hauls to the Telluride area. I
also understand there is no reclamation to be considered with this project. Our property
values well go down extensively, while some outfit comes into our county and profits big
time. San Miguel County has a building regulation, that no homes will be built on the
skylines, so why should this ugly monster equipment and dust pit be allowed any different
privileges. Yes I'm aware the pit is suppose to be Montrose County, but this is on the
county line adjacent to San Miguel County, homes only being 200 feet to approximately''/2
mile away. We've lived with the gravel pit in the past, but it was only being used for
county roads, the use was very short time with no crushing, until Skelton took over the
pit, that's when we started getting dusted every day from the easterly winds in the AM
hours, that wasn't enough, but then the all night crushing, heavy truck traffic, on the road
where school buses and local residents traveled daily. The entrance to this pit in on a hill
with a blind corner. Now were talking a new owner with expectations of a 24 hour
operation for the next 20 years.
I would hope that you would give a lot of consideration into this matter, before allowing
such an operation to go on without some consideration for the families living in this
immediate area.
Sincerely,
Gladys Bennett
Land Owner
