Box 2679
Colorado Springs, CO 80901-2679
Re: 1987 Annual Iydrologic Report, Somerset IAine, C-80-002
Dear Mr. Balaz:
I have reviewed the 1987 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) for the Somerset Mine.
I found the report well organized and I appreciated the statistical analysis
of data from each site. The figures were useful and the cross-sections and
flooded workings map were most illuminating.
It was difficult to ascertain the parameters for which you should be
monitoring from the files and permit application. Section 2.05.6(3)(b)(iii)
of the permit application suggests that the parameters monitored would be
consistent with baseline data found in section 2.D4.7. Minor Revision 2,
submitted July 15, 1987, suggests that parameters listed in the Colorado
Guidelines for Water Quality Parameters (9/16/82) would be monitored. Please
clarify this situation. We would appreciate it if SAR and mass balan,Ge
eval.uakiā¢ons_were included with the data. You should be able to obtain this
free-of-charge from your laboratory.
Several other questions came up during this evaluation for which we would
appreciate responses within thirty days. These relate to both the AHR and the
Renewal.
1) Please submit or reference the location of completion diagrams for B-6
and H-10.
2) Revise the Probable Hydrologic Consequences section (PHC) to include
predictions on the rate of flooding of the workings, based on data
collected to date.
3) It appears that the utilization of data from two holes within the flooded
workings over a five mile extent is a considerable extrapolation. Please
suggest a way to improve the responsiveness of the data collection system
to the objectives of this study, or defend the current program.
4) The collection of "sedimentation ponds" at the Elk Creek Yards is
unwieldy to inspect and maintain. Despite the infrequency of discharge
events at the site, the staff is uncomfortable with the current system,
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Coloratlo 80203-2273 Tel.
