The issue should be investigated then -see accompanying information sheet.
Critical habitats/vegetative communities impacted:
Habitats on the site are in poor condition due to livestock overgrazing. The Second Creek
corridor, which crosses the site, would likely be fairly good habitat if it wasn't grazed. The prairie
dogs are valuable as food for predators, but there are too few of them to call this area "critical".
Assessment of impact:
Most of the site is previously disturbed by agricultural activity and has low value to wildlife. About
8 medium to large sized cottonwoods would be removed. Avery disturbed wetland area along
Second Ci eek would be excavated away. The interception of Second Creek by the newly created
lake might affect habitat downstream by de-watering unless a by-pass for the water was arranged.
The loss of prairie dogs would slightly degrade the hunting habitat in the area for hawks and
eagles.
Mine Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration is
designed.
Recreate wetlands to replace those lost along Second Creek. This could be done by creating
shallow-water habitat along the new lake edge.
Plant trees and/or shrubs to replace the cottonwoods to be removed. Save a couple of the larger
cottonwoods and place them along the new wetland's edge to provide habitat value.
