N III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~
SUMMARY -NORTH OF DOUGLAS PASS
This application amends an existing 110 permit, M81-043. It increases the area from
7.12 acres to 9.59 acres. The present pit excavation and disturbed azea is approaching the
maximum 7.12 acres allowed by the existing 110 permit. The increase in acreage will allow for
continued use of the pit for 3(1 years at past production rates. Also, it will provides the acreage
required to reclaim the existing slope to an average slope of 1:1, more consistent with the
existing terrain. The existing pit excavation consists of a very steep cut about 100 feet in height.
The shale material in this pit is layered and no[ extremely hazd. Therefore, the most
economical method of excavation is ripping with dozers. The shale in this pit makes good road
subgrade and fill material but is not suitable for quality aggregates. Therefore, crushed
aggregates or hot mixed bituminous paving will not be produced. Blasting is not anticipated.
This pit provides fill material for maintaining the upper one half of Highway 139.
Normal maintenance of Highway 139 requires small quantities, probably about 1,000 CY per
yeaz. Use can be much higher if the Douglas Pass slide moves, requiring reconstruction of miles
of road.
The pit is located on Bureau of Land Management property and has been mined since
1966. It is located west of Highway 139 at milepost 47.
