Mr. Allen:
I have been directed by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board to contact
CDOT and request that CDOT participate in an inspection and evaluation of
potential hazards to Hwy 141 resulting from mining and reclamation
activities at the Surface Rock Pit. The landowner and operator, John
Schmahl, has a reclamation permit through this agency for his mining
activities at the Surface Rock Pit site.
The Surface Rock Pit permit area is located approximately 22 miles SW of
Grand Junction, on Hwy 141 in Unaweep Canyon, in portions of the SE 1/4 of
Section 9, and portions of the SW 1/4 of Section 16, both in T14S, R100W,
6th PM, Mesa County.
The reclamation permit is approved for 28 acres affected area. Mining and
reclamation activities occur at two locations. Location A (SE 1!4 of
Section 9), is a quarry type extraction of metamorphic and igneous rock and
is approved for 18 acres affected area. Location B (SW 1/4 of Section 16),
is a granite boulder and backf'ill material harvesting area and is approved
for 10 acres affected area.
The issues of concern include the stability of a 110' highwall and 60,000 cy
stockpile of -3" material located adjacent to and upslope from Hwy 141.
DMG staff have identified September 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 24, 25, 26, 27 and
28, 2001, as available dates for the inspection with CDOT personnel.
