After extensive
analysis of baseline data collected from July 1999 through June 2000, the following list of parameters
and suggested protection limits have been identified for analysis in the Commercial Phase. The
frequency of sample collection is based upon the location of the well relative to the 0 - 5 year mine
panel. Also, a monthly frequency is specified for the point of compliance well 21-3 (U, A, B, and D).
In addition, please note that Well 20-1 is not included in this list as it is scheduled for plugging and
abandonment prior to start-up of the Commercial Phase. Only water level data at Well 20-4A is
proposed for the Commercial Phase due to the high pH and suspected cement contamination. No
water samples have been collected at Well 19-3, as yet, due to insufficient water volume in the well.
Well 19-3 will be included in the sampling list and all Commercial Phase parameters will be collected
when sampling is possible. In addition to the parameters identified in the Numeric Protection Levels
document, the sampling list will also include pH, conductivity, temperature, and static water level each
time a water sample is collected.
Each of the remaining Dissolution Surface wells will be equipped with adown-hole probe to monitor
temperature, pressure, and conductivity on a continuous frequency. The probes have recently been
received and are presently staged in our warehouse awaiting the final baseline sample collection.
Please review the suggested Numeric Protection Levels proposed in this document and provide any
comments you may have to modify or change the document. Processing of the July 2000
groundwater data is currently in progress and should be completed before the end of the month at
which time American Soda intends to issue a Final Numeric Protection Levels document.
In addition to the parameters and monitoring frequency set forth in this document, American Soda will
incorporate the six points outlined in the Divisions' Ground Water Compliance Protocol into the
Commercial Phase Monitoring Program.
Should you have any questions or comments regarding this DRAFT document, please contact me at
(970) 285-0406.
Natural Sodium Products For A Cleaner Environment
