Room 115 J
E~

Denver, Colorado b0203 I
~~

Phone: (1031 B6fi-3567 I I
FAY: 13031 R}~-g106
DEPARTMENT OF
NATUR~II.
Date: September 7, 1995 RESOURCES
To: Harry Ranney enYaomer
Governor
From: Kent Gorham lames S Lochhead
Executive Director
Michael B. Long
CC: Dan Hernandez Division Dueuor
RE: Reduction in Hydrologic Monitoring, TR-06, Hamilton Mine, ~C-
91-078
I have completed review of the materials submitted by Honeywood
Coal Co. on their proposed plan to reduce hydrologic monitoring
(TR-06) at the Hamilton Mine. Materials reviewed, in addition to
the information provided for TR-06 by the operator included the
1992, 1993 and 1994 Annual Hydrology Reports, section 2.04, 2.05,
and Exhibit 3 of the approved permit, and the hydrology
correspondence file for this mine. Apparently, there have been no
formal reviews of the AHR's for this mine by a staff hydrologist,
including the 1994 AHR. Therefore, I have included a monitoring
frequency review of the 1994 AHR in accordance with the currently
approved plan.
1994 Annual Hvdroloov Report Review
1. The 3rd quarter monitoring episode for the following sites
were apparently missed: N-lA, N-2, AW-3, AW-4, AW-5, AW-6,
AW-7, BW-1, BW-2, BW-3, SP-1, SP-2, SP-3, SP-4, SP-5, SP-6.
Why were these sites not visited during the 3rd quarter of
1994?
2. The TDS average historical value is skewed by an obviously
erroneous value of 2020 mg/1 for site R-1. Please have the
operator correct this information.
3. No data of any kind was recorded for springs SP-3, SP-4, and
SP-5 for the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters. Please submit the
missing data for these three springs.
TR-06 Review
1. The operator is proposing to conduct quarterly monitoring with
an annual full-suite sample in Bramiers Draw, Lower Broad
Creek and Section 33 Creek. I propose that the Division
approve this portion of the revision. ( see ;(<5 below)
