• iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ~
MEMORANDUM
TO: Humphries, Oehler, Pendleton, Stevens
FROM: POSey
RE: Review of Battle Mountain's Protocol Document
Attached is my review of the Battle Mountain Protocol Proposal for sampling and
analysis of surface, ground, and process water solutions and lysitneters. Also
attached is a copy of Dr. Hyatt's review.
Please recall that this is due May 20.
I'll be in the field May 18-22, so cannot respond to your comments. If they are
significant, or if my review needs a lot of work, I suggest that someone
(Gilstrap, etc.) merge my comments with your own. [Details: My document is
formatted in WordPerfect. When you squeeze WordPerfect through the Wang tubes
into an Officewriter document, the formatting gets stuck on the tubes. So,
please have someone walk back through it and be certain that CN- gets changed
back to CN~, C02 gets changed back to COZ, and underlined things stay underlined.
Thank you.]
Dr. Hyatt made several suggestions about having the Conservancy Commission review
the incoming data from Battle Mountain. It is my assumption that Battle
Mountain, not MLRD, is supposed to be supplying the Conservanc with data.
Likewise, I don't think the Board meant for the Conservancy to b~ involved in
this process forever, and Dr. Hyatt's group clearly intend to stay involved for
the long run. we should consider making that clear to them, if not also to
ourselves. Otherwise, his comments are generally excellent aid definitely
deserve consideration. (Please note my disagreements with his note number 2.)
we are still waiting on the Pond Characterization Study, and the Results of it
will affect the sampling protocol. I'll review that when I return. Despite Art
Lefler's over-the-phone comments to the contrary, I believe the data he mentioned
reflect real vertical variations in the ponds, that higher cyanide levels occur
in the deeper samples, and that composite samples will need to lqe collected.
However, we will need to study the data when they arrive, and discuss them with
the lab.
m:min/staff.mem
r~CYO~//t
l~'~c- ~-
s/~ 7

~(4'J•LC/J
_~z~. ,
