M-88-112 Dear Jim: During an early July 1992 telephone conversation, Andre Douchane indicated that Battle Mountain Gold Company had completed another engineering estimate of the volume of water in the San Luis tailings impoundment. That amount was approximately 77. acre feet, plus or minus 15 percent. Since that time water has been added to the impoundment through pit dewatering activities and intense summer thunderstorms. Water has also been consumed in the milling process and through enhanced evaporation. BMG believes that the recently acquired site specific information should be used to update the water balance model for the operation. BMG is currently developing information on the exact tailings and water levels, the as-constructed tailings impoundment stage-storage volumes, and measured precipitation and pit dewatering volumes. This informa- tion will be utilized to update the water balance model for the project based on as-constructed and as-operated site specific data. Once the updated model is completed, it can then bey used as a verification of the site water balance by site personnel on a routine basis. We believe that this updating process will take ap~{proximately three weeks. Once we have completed the update, we wlill provide the Division with the updated information.
