Your increased security was
instigated in satisfaction of abatement requirement /tl attached to the March
31, 1992 Order of the Mined Land Reclamation Board.
OF ~~/O y
t`O 'P~\
6~ ~ Ol
~~.~{) J
~ms+ ~i
~ re ]6
Rov Romer
Governor
Michael B. LOng
D rvi soon Dllecfor
As you indicate in your letter dated September 9, 1992, the weak acid
dissociable (WAD) cyanide levels in the upper and lower tailings ponds have
been lowered to levels .vhich no longer represent a threat to humans or
wildlife. However, I continue to be concerned regarding the potential threat
presented by the collection pond. You indicate that the level of WAD cyanide
in the ccil2ction pond was approximately 38 ppm a; of early September. As you
will recall, I stated to the Board that I suspect this level will increase as
the high-cyanide tailings fluid slug slowly ,vorks it; ,vay through the tailings
and the collection system to the collection Pend.
I .vculd appr?date a detailed description of how BMRI proposes to eikher; (1)
ensure wildlife access to the collection pond is prevented, or (?) ensure the
~•ranide levels in the collection pond will be maintained belo;r potent~aily
hazardous levels.
If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. I •.vill be
absent from my office the nest several days, returning the afternoon or'
Thursday, September 24th.
Sincerely yours,',.
COLORADO
James A.
