A'M- I ''
~ ca-~ each „~
RECEIVE
JUN 14 2004 /
Division of Minerals & 6eolopy
Division of Minerals and Geology /
I313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver CO 80203
387 Horse Thief Lane
Durango CO 81301
June 11, 2004
R-~
This letter relates to the application by Sandco, Inc. for a regular (112) Construction
Materials Operation Reclamation Permit for a site located at or near Section 14,
Township 36 North, Range 9 West, N.M.P.M.
My concern revolves around the forces of nature, which will act to turn the proposed
mining pit and future lake into a river cutoff. As you can see by the attached map the
Animas River makes a sharp turn to the west and then to the east encircling the proposed
- - - - --~ pit and future lake- Rudimentary geomorphology teaches this b8nd ib the-rivei is su6jecf
to become a cutoff meander in the future. In other words the river will attempt to cutoff
the bend to the west and return to the east by simply flowing from north to south straight
across the proposed pit. Construction of the pit should accelerate this natural geological
process and put the future lake in peril. In fact, the lake will just become the river. There
will be no future lake!
If this situation, and all others, is acceptable to the Division of Minerals and Geology
then go ahead and approve the permit. If it is not, then the permit should be denied.
~~ ~
,r Gordon M. Greve
Attachment
cc. La Plata County Clerk and Recorder
