Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Tru stee
I have received your submittal dated 11/29/05, consisting of a noxious weed control plan for the site named above.
The submittal was to satisfy an inspection problem concerning the presence of Canada thistle which did not appear
to be under a control plan.
The plan you provided appears adequate for controlling the Canada thistle on the small area that was noted in the
Division's inspection. You are aware that Round-up (aka Glyphosate) is anon-selective herbicide. As such, it will
kill all vegetation it contacts, including any desirable vegetaton on the area being treated. The area in question is
the surface of a small stockpile in the pit. It appeazed to be topsoil, but my observation was not conclusive. If it is
topsoil, it is imperative that the thistle be eliminated, even if it means that the establishment of grass is delayed a
few years. Control of Canada thistle will require several years of spraying and mowing, so please be vigilant with
the monitoring and aggressive with the treatments. You should also make sure that this plant does not spread to
other areas of the permit.
Round-up is not persistent in the soil, and after the thistle is gone, grass may be planted. Please report the activities
and progress in your annual reports.
The Division considers the weed control plan to be adequate, and is approving the technical revision. The
outstanding problem at the site is, therefore, considered to be corrected. If there are any questions, please contact
me at the Division's Dutango field office: 701 Camino del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301; telephone: 970-
247-5193.
Sincerely,
~e~ ~
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Ec: Harry Posey, DMG
C:\seifert nox pb con tr2 appr/rco
Office of Office of Colorado
..._,.,+. __a o..,.r....-.:..., e~.:..o ,.,d i.,~..:.,o nn~..e~ (:cnlneiral Survnv
