This proposed 9.5 acre open pit mine near Rosita, Colorado
will affect mostly grassland and fort habitat. Wildlife species that could possibly be affected include but aze not
limited to mule deer, antelope, black bear, mountain lion, maw small game and bird species. The proposed mine will
be relatively small and should not have major impacts on wildlife in the azea.
The CDOW is not awaze of a reclamation plan although one may exist. In that regazd, CDOW recommends the
following be wnsidered when reclaiming the site:
• Stockpile topsoil and seed with a temporary seed mix to prevent erosion. ,
• Aggressive monitoring of noxious weeds including detection and removal. Noxious weeds can be introduced
not only through natural sources such as wind and wildlife but can also be transpoRed on equipment used in
the mining process. Disttubed land is very vulnerable to noxious weed invasion.
• Reseeding with native grass mix which should include at least one forb species.
• Grading of the pit so that the edges are no steeper than 3:1 to prevent injury or entrapment of wildlife.
• Exclusion of livestock grazing until full reclamation and bond release.
The CDOW appreciates the opportunity to comment on the proposed Swallow Perlite Mine in Custer County. If you
have arty questions or require additional information please contact District Wildlife Manager, Rebecca Manly, at
(719) 429-0196.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, RusseO George, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Jeffrey Crawford, Chair • Tom Burke, vce Chair • Ken Tones, Secretary
Members, Robert Bray • Rick Enstrom • Philip James • Claire O'Neal • Richard Ray • Robert Shoemaker
Ex O(fido Members, Russeg George and Don Ament
L~
xegronat tvtanager
Southeast Region
