Land Owner: State of Colorado
Moderate to High Density
Prairie Dog Colonies
(occasional, widely
distributed prairie dog
' burrows can be found
elsewhere)
OTHER WILDLIFE HABITAT AND RESOURCES -
Upland areas support pronghorn, several species of passerine birds, and various
rodents including mice and ground squirrels. In general, the upland habitat is poor to
fair at this time due to the impact of drought. However, it is improving as grass and
forb growth recovers. Burrowing Owl may occur in prairie dog colonies.
Lowland areas, particularly in the riparian forest, provide a good habitat for
occasional deer (mule and white - tailed), numerous bird species, nesting
for great horned owl, red - tailed hawk, and American kestrel. Wetlands
(mostly created) along Coal Creek provide excellent habitat for
blackbirds and other bird species that prefer moist to wet habitats
such as flycatchers and kingbirds. Unfortunately, the dense
4,385,600 leafy spurge and open range grazing in the forest areas limits
the value of the habitat for wildlife. Pronghorn sometimes seen
Q in forest areas.
Co
n No specific nesting sites, fox burrows, or other specific
"homes" have been identified to date.
