Box 337231 Division Director
Greeley, CO 80633
RE: Permit M-1999-021 Stegner Farms, Aggregate Industries Technical Revision TR-003
Dear Ms. Davis,
The Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) has reviewed the report received at the DMG office February 20,
2002, filed as a requirement of technical revision (TR-003) to permit M-1999-021. The report appears to adequately
address the issues and concerns related to the down gradient effects of the slurry wall at the Stegner Farms site.
Though the report admits that the slurry wall is probably affecting the groundwater levels down gradient of the site,
the report also adequately identifies that these effects are magnified by the other variables of two years of drought,
local groundwater withdrawal, and a cessation of irrigation at the site.
The DMG does have one lingering concern regazding the effects of the slurry wall at the site. The report indicates
that the groundwater is mounding up gradient of the slurry wall. In that precipitation levels have been reduced for
the past two years, the DMG is concerned as to the affects up gradient of the slurry wall during a yeaz of average or
increased precipitation. Measurements recorded at the up gradient well, S-2, revealed that groundwater was within
2 feet of the ground surface of a period anywhere between one day to nearly three weeks after installation of the
slurry wall. Therefore, the DMG requests that Aggregate Industries adhere to the following:
• Continue the monthly monitoring of water level measurements at all the monitoring wells relative to the Stegner
Farms pit. _
• Adhere to the commitment to commence weekly water level measurements if the groundwater level reaches
within 2 feet of the ground surface.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (303)866-4935.
Sincerely,
~)~~~~
K/ate Pickford
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Carl Mount; DMG (electronic)
Kathy Troudt Riley, attorney for Dawin Roe and William Martin
