The purposes of the meeting were:
1. To review new analytical data concerning the major ion and isotope chemistry of
water in the West Elk Mine (WEM) sump and the Edwazds Portal spring. The
new data were not available at the time of Mountain Coal Company's (MCC)
presentation to CDMG on January 21, 1998.
2. To discuss potential interpretations of the new data with respect to possible
sources of the water dischazging from the Edwards Portal spring.
3. To try to reach agreement regarding acceptable interpretations ofthe data.
The following describes the main points of the meeting.
INTRODUCTION
We opened the meeting with an explanation of why the new data were important to
determining whether or not WEM sump water is or is not a significant contributor to the
water issuing from the Edwazds Portal spring. The key points were:
1. It is no longer necessary or appropriate to use fault waters as representing the sump
water quality for comparison with water from the Edwazds Portal spring. There is
now representative data concerning sump water quality.
U
Z
N
lL
W
W
Z
C7
Z
W
lL
W
Q
3
H
S
f~
~~
Since the presentation, MCC has obtained sump water samples from the portion of
the sump which would have been the first to be filled. A valved pipe in a horizontal
drill hole through the 11 NE longwall panel allows sampling from the lowest point
