Can our
beautiful mountain ever be reclaimed to its full natural beauty
again? 1 think not.
In section E.1 of the Reclamation Plan, Battle Mountain
Gold states they plan to use a cover crop of wheat grass to
reclaim the slopes disturbed 6y mining activities. Whet about
trees? What about the reclamation of our native trees and
shrubs like the Pinon Pine, the Cedar, Juniper, and other plant
and tree species common to the area? If the purpose of
reclamation is to try to return the land back to its natural
state, then do not ask the people of San Luis to compromise the
beauty of the Rito Seco by planting grass instead of native trees
and shrubs. A Costilla County business has the resources to
provide BMG with the necessary seeds and technical advice to
replant native species (Dean Swift Seed Company, Jaroso,
Colorado?.
Battle Mountain does not care about the aesthetic value of
our Rito Seco. They are not concerned about the people who go
to Rito Seco to collect their herbs or to enjoy the only
recreational park to our area.
