The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 118,
Paragraph 3, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on May 29, 2001, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Lorencito Canyon Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. All review and
comment periods as provided in the Act and the Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
Lorencito Coal Company proposes to modify the mine plan to include contour mining in the lower portions of
Lorencito Canyon, Jeff Canyon and Little Jeff Canyon. A coal loadout would also be located along the railroad
tracks at the mouth of the canyon.
The combined surface and underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 3 miles west of
Segundo on Hwy 12. The permit azea is further described as follows:
On lands south of the Purgatoire River, lands east of the South Fork of the Purgatoire and Alamosa Canyon, lands
north of Vermejo Pazk, and lands west of Widow Woman Canyon containing approximately 17,862 acres.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Tercio.
A copy of the revision application is available for public inspection at the Las Animas County Courthouse, 200
East First Street, Room 104, Trinidad, CO 81082, and at the Division office. For additional information, to
