Briefly summarized, Bear Coal is
requesting permission to cease monitoring many of the older subsidence
monuments. The majority of the older monuments were required to verify the
stability of the ancient landslides on the slopes of the North Fork of the Gunnison
Bluer, opposite the townsite of Somerset, Colorado. During the permitting of the
Bear Mine #3, the Diuision expressetl a concern that reactivation of these slides
might affect the North Fork. The result of the past eight years of monitoring,
attached to the application, demonstrate that while the slopes haUe subsided as
predicted, no deleterious rejuuenatlon of the ancient slides has occurred. Bear
Coal will not remove these monuments, so they could be resurveyed at the
Division's request in the Tuture.
Bear Coal will also continue monitoring the three monuments (U25, U26 and 1
recently installed in Lone Pine Gulch.
