The growth rate in Ouray County is
alarming and poses a real threat to the continued existence of
wildlife.
I understand Ouray County would like to increase the size of their
operation. I don't have a problem with this as long as they do some
reclarrtation or mitigation in the area. There has been little
reclamation of the pit in the past. 1 would also recommend a winter
closure of the gravel operation. I would like to see that whole tract
of BLM closed at both ends to all winter-time human activity. The
roads which enter tltrouglt the deer fence across from Ridgway State
Park (llutch Charlie and Dallas Uay Use) go clear through to the gravel
pit. This area includes some DPOR land and is one of the last public
winter ranges in the south end of the County. I understand a closure
of this type would have to be coordinated witl~t Division of Parks.
Thank you for this opportunity to comment,
Sln,erelyr `,
Ken Miller
District Wildlife Manager- Ridgway
cc: Mike McLain, Rick Sherman, Jeff Riddle DPOR, MLRB, U wtuy NEB.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Kenneth L.
