Pit Expaasioq Rio Blanco County Road
#8, Rio Blanco County, Colorado.
Gentlemeq
As requested, Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc. visited the project site on October 20. 1994 to
conduct a gravel evaluation for the Proposed County Gravel Pit Expansion in Rio Blanco County,
Colorado.
To investigate the subsoils within [he proposed expansion area seven (7) test holes were drilled with a
track-mounted drill rig. Samples of the sands and gravels were obtained for future reference. The
approximate test hole locations are shown on Figure #1.
The subsoils encountered in the test holes generally consisted of a layer of topsoil overlying natural
silts, sands, gravels and sandstone-siltstone bedrock to the mabmum depth investigated, 47 fee[.
Graphic logs of the exploratory test holes aze presented in Figures #2 and #3, and the associated
Legend and Notes are presented in Figure #4.
~-
The topsoil encountered in the test holes varied from approximately` to_L inches is thickness.
Natural ;ands and sii[s were encountered beneath the topsoil layer in test holes 4 throuz~' -and
extended to depths of 2S, 2, 3.5 and 8.5 Feet, respectively. The sands and silts were fine to coarse
grained with gravels, non-plastic, loose, dry [o slightly moist and light tan to white.
Sands and gravels were encountered below the sands and silts and extended to depths of 30.5 and 41
feet in test holes 1 and 2 and to the maximum depths investigated in test holes 3 through 7. The sands
and gravels were clean to silty with occasional sand lenses, fine to coarse grained with cobbles and
occasional boulders, non to very low plastic, loose to dense, dry to slightly moist and light tan to brown
in color. It should be Doted that practical rig refusal was encountered in test holes 3 through 7 at
depths of 39, 46, 47, 42 and 42 fee[, respectively, oa boulders. In addition, the lead auger and cutting
head were snapped off oo a boulder a[ a depth of 42 feet in test hole 7.
