Thanks.
Dan
-----Original Message-----
From: Mathews, Dan
Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 2004 9:46 AM
To: 'Jim Stover'
Cc: Brown, Sandy
Subject: RE: McClane Pond
Ok, thanks Jim. I'll see that this gets included in the NOV file. I also included your pond inspection report of Oct. 28 as an
attachment to my 11/22 inspection report. My statement that the pond report indicated "no seepage, cracking or other apparent
structural problems with the embankment at that time" was based on the "Structural" section of the pond inspection report. During
my site inspection, Rodney had not mentioned the holes in the spillway pipe. He indicated that the excavation had shown no
indication of seepage along the pipe.
I stopped by the mine late yesterday afternoon. They had completed clean-out of the "in-ditch" sediment trap above the pond. The
pond had not been completely pumped out, and I will extend the abatement time frame until next Monday, to allow sufficient time to
dewater the pond. The cracking on the pond embankment was more extensive yesterday than when I first observed it on the 19th.
I Dan
-----Original Message-----
From: Jim Stover [mailto:jestover@bresnan.net]
Sent: Monday, November 22, 2004 3:56 PM
To: Dan Mathews
Subject: McClane Pond
Dan
Your inspection report states that my pond inspection report "however the report indicated no seepage, cracking or other
apparent structural problems with the embankment at that time"
My report states "the mine was performing maintenance on the line because it had noticed seepage north of the outlet valve
on the primary spillway".
They dug out the spillway, found the holes in the outlet pipe, the holes were leaking, and concluded that was the source of
the seepage. There was not much disturbance associated with the repair so 1 do not believe the repair caused the current
instability.
Jim Stover, P.E.
Consulting Engineer
970-245-4101 (Voice)
970-242-7908 (Fax)
1 /24/2004
