(MCC) submits the enclosed minor revision application to drill
fourteen (14) boreholes. Twelve (12) of the boreholes will be located in the vicinity of the main
mine facilities, and the other two (2) holes will be located in Sylvester Gulch. Of these
boreholes, 1 will be completed as a monitoring well, 6 will be completed as inclinometers, and 7
will be completed as piezometers. Three of the inclinometers and three of the piezometers will
replace current installations that aze no longer functional. The remaining installations will
provide additional coverage for the site-wide geotechnical monitoring program. Borehole 99-01,
will become RPE-7, the additional monitoring well added to the ground water monitoring
program in Technical Revision No. 88. Please find enclosed a summary table of the holes to be
drilled, their depths, and how they will be completed. A map is also enclosed that shows the
location of these holes. The revision, upon approval, will be incorporated into Exhibit 12A, a
new exhibit entitled, Geotechnical Drilling Information.
All boreholes will be drilled in previously disturbed azeas. No topsoil stripping will be
necessary, and no temporary roads will be required to access the boreholes. The well,
piezometers, and inclinometers will have a protective casing to protect the hole from damage.
Soil sampling will be conducted on four of the boreholes, 99-03, 99-04, 99-10, and 99-1 l . Split
barrel soil sampling will be conducted every five feet, starting at five feet and ending at bedrock.
MCC expects most of the formations to be dry; however, there may be some shallow saturated
zones that may be encountered during drilling. Reclamation of the piezometers and
inclinometers will occur when the installation is no longer functional, or in the case of the
monitoring well, removed upon approval of the Division. MCC will adhere to Rule 4.07.3(1) or
(2), depending on conditions encountered, when sealing any boreholes.
MCC expects to begin this drilling project on June 28th.
Please call if you have any questions.
