Hernandez, Dan
From: Hernandez, Dan
Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2006 11:38 AM
To: 'Scott Klarich'
Cc: Walker, Byron; Berry, David;'susan.werner@state.co.us'
Subject: RE: FW: Twentymile Coal Company, Sedimentation Pond E -Unanticipated Coal Fines
Discharge
xi, Scott.
I have just faxed you (at WQCD fax # 303-782-0390) a copy of a fax that we received from
Twentymile Coal Company earlier today. It is a copy of the MSD Sheet for the flocculent
used by the company in their coal fine slurry. Twe nt ymile Coal Co has sent a copy of this
MSD sheet to Bi11 Atkinson, an aquatic biologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife's
Steamboat Springs office. It is my understanding that Mr. Atkinson will be at the mine
some time today.
I am also anticipating an e-mail from Twentymile Coal Co that will contain info from the
flocculent manufacturer regarding the potential impacts to aquatic life from the
flocculent. According to Twentymile Coal, the manufacturer has indicated that the
flocculent will have no impacts to aquatic life. I will forward this e-mail to you as
soon as I receive it.
Finally, I anticipate receiving an e-mail from Twentymile Coal Co with a pdf of a map
showing the distance between the point where the coal fines entered Foidel Ck to the
nearest downstream domestic and irrigation water users (according to Jerry Nettleton with
the coal company, the distance between the discharge and the nearest domestic and
irrigation water users along the streams is about six miles). I will forward this e-mail
to you as well.
Twentymile Coal Company is requesting a bit of relief on our directions to notify all
users from the point of discharge to just above the confluence of Trout Creek and the
Yampa River. They have indicated verbally that flow in Foidel Creek is so low at this
time of year that there are reaches in Foidel Creek, between the point of discharge and
the confluence of Foidel Creek with Middle Creek (the first stream that Foidel Creek
merges with), where flow is not occurring. I have asked Byron Walker, our inspector at
the mine, to verify this. It is possible we may revise this one particular direction,
pending further field investigation.
Thanks for your assistance,
Dan
-----Original Message-----
From: Scott Klarich [mailto:Scott.Klarich@state.co.us]
Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2006 10:00 AM
To: Dan Hernandez
Subject: Re: FW: Twentymile Coal Company, Sedimentation Pond E - Unanticipated Coal Fines
Discharge
Thanks Dan - Your response expectations seem very appropriate.
