Main
Florence, Co 61226
Dear Mr. Markus,
This note is in regard to the request by Florence Sand and Gravel
Co., to convert two 110 permits to one 112 Regular Permit. The notice
was recently sent to the Fremont Soil Conservation District as
required.
I am familiar with this site. On June 14, 1996 I made a
vegetation inventory of the site, and also met and talked with Mr. Del
Rodarmel at the site. My report of vegetation inventory was mailed to
Lloyd V. Barnhart, Pueblo, a few days later.
My only comment concerns the planned grass seeding mix to be
broadcast on the graded site at the close of gravel mining operation.
The planned seed mix consists of:
Crested Wheatgrass - 8 lbs PLS/ac
Pubescent Wheatgrasa - 8 lbs PLS/ac
Sand Dropseed - 3 lbs PLS/ac
Yellow Sweet Clover - 2 lbs PLS/ac
It this mixture is planted, it will amount to 408 seeds per
square foot, much more than the amount normally needed. This ie
because Sand Dropseed is very fine seed and has a high number of seeds
per pound (5,300,000 seeds per pound). There is already a fairly
large population of Sand Dropseed present on adjacent land for natural
re-seeding.
My suggestion is to reduce the Sand Dropseed to .5 lb.,
substitute 6 lbs thickspike wheatgrass for the pubescent and add 3 lbs
PLS Sideoats Grams. This would amount to an adequate 120 seeds per
square foot. Both Thickspike and Sideouts are native and do well on
sandy to gravelly soils such as this site. Seed is readily available.
