Long
Re: Response To Citizen Complaint, Bowie No. 1 and No. 2 Mines, Bowie Resources Limit~idis~on Dnec~°r
Dear Mr. Rudin:
The Division has received your letter, dated May 26, 1999, in which you expressed your organization's
opposition to any permit expansion concerning Bowie Resources Limited. The Division has several
revisions in-house which, if approved, would expand the operations at the Bowie No.] Mine and the
Bowie No. 2 Mine. At present, the proposed revisions would increase production at the Bowie No. 1
loadout to 3 million tons per year (Technical Revision No. 31) ,allow longwall mining within the
present permit area and at the present rate of 2 million tons per year at the Bowie No. 2 Mine (Perini:
Revision No. 2) and add support facilities and increase production to 5 million tons per year at the
Bowie No. 2 Mine (Permit Revision No. 3).
The Division is in the process of performing a thorough review of these revisions for those issues
which the Division has jurisdiction over. Before the Division issues its proposed decisions, there is a
public comment period for each revision and an opportunity to request an informal conference for each
of the permit revisions. Afrer the Division issues proposed decisions on these revisions, the public can
request a hearing before [he Mined Land Reclamation Board.
At the date of this letter, the public comment period for Technical Revision 31 has expired. The public
comment periods and opportunity to request an informal conference for Permit Revisions Nos. 2 and 3
are still open. The notices announcing the public comment periods and the opportunity to request an
informal conference were published in the Delta County Independent. When the Division issues
proposed decisions for these revisions, notices will be published announcing the opportunity to request
a hearing before the Mined Land Reclamation Board.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please call me.
Sincerely, n
t ~y-~Ce-~-Y.
~seph .
