(BMRI) - San Luis
DMG Permit No. M-88-112
Dear Mr. Oehler: /~
The following is a summary of the water sampling activities ~
and lab analysis reports where detectable cadmium
concentrations were noted.
As outlined in section 4.2.5 Pre-Detox and Post-Detox
Sampling and section 4.2.6 Tailings and Collection Pond
Sampling of the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Protocol
Manual, TR-006, each process point water sample is tested
for the presence of sulfides with lead acetate paper. If
the sulfide test is positive, cadmium nitrate is used as a
pre-treatment before field filtering the sample. Phe
purpose of this procedure is to eliminate sulfide
interference with the cyanide analysis. This methodology is
outlined in "Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and
Waste," EPA-600\4-79-020.
Lead acetate testing of the water samples has never
indicated a positive sulfide result. However, cadmium
nitrate was first used as a pre-treatment during the May 28,
1992 bi-weekly sampling event and use continued through the
November 11, 1992 bi-weekly. Process point samples were
pre-treated by adding cadmium nitrate crystals to the water
sample, then a barrel filter was used to field filter the
sample. The samples were treated with cadmium nitrate even
though the sulfide testing with lead acetate paper was
ne;a±i..e to ensure that all po*ential- sulfide interference
was eliminated.
A detectable cadmium concentration was first reported by
Core Laboratories on a sample collected on June 10, 1992 at
well M-9. A chronological listing by monitoring location of
samples with detectable cadmium concentrations is attached.
The sample dates marked with an asterisk indicate samples
that were collected directly after a process point or
directly after a sample where dissolved cadmium was
detected. The dissolved metals sample for surface water and
ground water is field filtered using the same barrel filter
as used during the pre-treatment of process point samples.
PO.
