BOX 187 Michael B. Long
Division Director
Craig, Colorado 81626
Re: Trapper Mining Inc., Pemut No. C-81-010, Lippard Spring No. 1
Dear Mr. Koehler:
The Division has reviewed your letter of January 18, 2002 and its accompanying cross-section. We
have the following comments.
1) The letter and cross-section adequately demonstrate that the Lippazd Spring No. 1 is
stratigraphically separated from the Browning and Colt pits.
2) It is not clear in the letter and cross-section exactly how the stratigraphic separation results in
hydraulic isolation of the spring from the pits. At depths of a few hundred feet coal seams can
function as aquifers thus allowing vertical, cross-stratal flow of ground water. Are there
lithologies in the ls` White - Q-seam stratigraphic sequence that would act as aquicludes and
prevent cross-stratal flow of ground water? If so, then please add them to the cross-section. If
there aze none, then please explain what would prevent cross-stratal flow.
3) Please identify in the cross-section the direction of ground water flow and how you determined
that direction.
4) Please remove the gridlines from the cross-section so the stratigraphy stands out.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
/ drn /~-~
Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Janet Binns, Dan Hernandez, DMG
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lux
