`r ~~~ ~'ENEC~4 Coal Company I ~8'Z c~s~ Seneca Coal Com July 21, 2005 Colorado Department of Health WQCD-PE-B2 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South Denver, CO 80246-1530 RECEIVED JUL 2 8 2005 pMbron of Minerals and Gedogy RE: Quarterly Discharge Monitoring Report for Permit CO-0000221 Dear Sir or Madam: Pursuant to the quarterly reporting requirements contained in Colorado Discharge Permit CO-0000221 for the Seneca Mine Complex, enclosed find the second quarter 2005 discharge monitoring reports for Points 002 to 006 and 008 to 017, In this quarter, no discharges occurred at Points 009 and 014. Intermittent discharges occurred at Point 011 and 013. Construction of Pond 014 was completed in September 2001, no discharge has occurred yet. Due to winter snow, vehicle access to Points 004, 008, 009, 015, 016 and 017 was closed until May. Monthly visits in April were performed by all-terrain vehicle or on foot. One excursion of effluent limits occurred this quarter. A sample collected on April 7 at Point 004 had a total recoverable iron value of 1.47 mg/1. The effluent limit is 1.0 mg/1. This discharge point was receiving snowmelt at the time. It is suspected that this high iron value is related to the relatively high total suspended solids value, 26 mg/1. Total recoverable iron values at this site were 0.23 mg/1 in May and 0.10 mg/1 is June, indicating that the excursion was transitory and that the discharge point is now in compliance.
