TR9PPER 1~ININ& INC.
,.:
~~~ ~~~I~~~~~~~~~~~~
April 6, 1989
CERTIFIED P843932064
Ms. Sandi Marek
Water Quality Control Division
Colorado Dept of Health
4210 East 11th Ave.
Denver, CO 80220
Dear Sandi:
Ref: NPDES Discharge Point 010
Trapper Mine NPDES Petmit No. CO-0032115.
a ~
rya t.x ~~+ ~ 9 ~ ~,., .
I~FR 7 i9~9
C~EGL!+P,n~?"fON Dit11510N
Based on analyses received March 31, 1989, total suspended solids (TSS) and
total iron exceeded effluent limitations at NPDES discharge point 010 on March
8, 1989. The TSS and iron values were 338 mg/1 and 8.4 mg/1, respectively.
The settleable solids analysis was low at <.1 ml/1/hr, The high values were
associated with moderately high winds and warm temperatures which resulted in
rapid surface snowmelt (runoff).
It is estimated that 18" of snow covered the ground at the end of February.
Our weather observer reported a 358 reduction in snow cover on 3/8/89 (see
attached Record of Climatological Observations form - daily temp maximum 56
degrees F) when compared to previous days snow melt. Due to the low
settleable solids and the high discharge volumes being associated with
snowmelt (runoff), Trapper continued to be in compliance with the teens and
conditions of our discharge permit.
Additional parameters measured during-this runoff period (3/8/89) included:
Flow: 411 gpm, Ph; 7.5, Water temperature: 0.5 degrees C, E.C.: 400/11.5
degrees C, and Oil and grease: 0 mg/1.
The NPDES sample point (Elk Gulch) is approximately 500 feet down-drainage on
a south facing slope. Above the sediment control facility is an area of
exposed overburden material which contributes sediment during precipitation
and zunoff periods.
Trapper intends to construct a single contour diversion ditch and associated
dozer basin at the toe of the overburden area to trap and store sediment and
reduce or abate the sediment contribution from this area. This construction
will take place in 1989 and should eliminate potential non-compliance
instarses.
P.O. Box 187
Craig, Colorado 81626
(303) 824-4401
