Gattany
Division Director
Re: Trapper Mine, C-81-010, Fourth Quarter 2002 Sediment Pond Inspection Reports
Dear Mr. Mattern:
Trapper Mining, Inc. provided a letter to the Division on April 17, 2003, in response to the Division's
letter, dated February 7, 2003, identifying that the sediment pond inspection report for the Middle Flume
No. 3 pond was left out of Trapper Mine's Fourth Quarter 2002 Sediment Pond Inspection package.
Trapper Mining, Ina (TMI) clazifies that Middle Flume No. 1 inspection was inadvertently missed in the
fourth quarter 2002, but the report had mislabeled the sediment pond that had been inspected. A revised
inspection form was supplied with this correction made. TMI conducted two sediment pond inspections
on Middle Flume No. 1 during the first quarter 2003. One inspection was conducted on January 21,
2003 and the second inspection was conducted on March 26, 2003. Neither inspection reported any
concerns with the Middle Flume no. 1 pond.
The Division understands that mine personnel had recently changed during fourth Quarter 2002. Ponds
were snow and ice covered and not dischazging in December 2002. Once TMI was made awaze of the
missed pond inspection, immediate steps were taken to conduct an additional inspection. Trapper has
forty sediment ponds or impoundments that aze inspected regularly and rarely misses an inspection. The
Division believes that this was aone-time occurrence and efforts were implemented to assure that all
ponds are inspected in the future.
Thank you for your timely correction of the Divisions concern.
/ ~ _
Janet Birl~s `
Environn ntal Pr ectio pecialist
C:/jhb/C81010/Sediment Pond Inspection/2002 revised fourth q.doc
