BANTA, Director
DATE: March 15, 1988
T0: B. Liddle, J. Stevens and M. Long
FROM: G. Squi re ~. ~ 0
RE: PURGATORIE RIVER FISH KILL NEAR WYOMING FUELS GOLDEN EAGLE MINE.
Kill reported to DOW by anonymous call Saturday p.m. March 4, 1988. Kill
started shortly below the Golden Eagle Mine mine water discharge point
and extended downstream to near Weston. Approximately 3 miles of the
Purgatorie River were affected.
On Tuesday afternoon March 8, CODOH (Sandy Marek) called MLRD (Jim
Stevens).
Also on Tuesday Gary Soldeno of CODOH (719-545-4650) took water samples
in the vicinity of the mine. CODOW also collected water samples which
they turned over to the DOH. The DOW (Bob Holder) also collected fish at
that time. Some of these fish have been frozen and are at the DOW's Fort
Collins office (contact Bi11 Adrian 303-484-2836). Water samples were
also taken by Dave Stout an employee of Wyoming Fuels.
Some of the DOH's samples are being analyzid by the DOH's water lab,
other samples are being used for bioassay testing at the EPA lab in
Lakewood (Cloys Parrish, 303-236-5084). A call to the EPA Lab showed LC
50 after 96 hours on Ceriodaphnia at water dilutions of 3 to 6%. Fathead
minnows are showing LC 100% after 48 hours at a water concentration of 6%.
EPA still has about 300 ml of the water available for other testing.
On Friday March 11, MLRD personnel (Gregg Squire, Bob Liddle and Jim
Stevens) inspected the fish kill area. Other individuals who were at the
site at that time included Bob Holder, the local area DOW contact
(719-846-4834), Eric Lundberg CDOW Regional Information Chief
(719-473-2945 OColorado Springs), Gary Soldano of the CDOH and Tom
Augustine, the Civil Engineer for the Golden Eagle and New Elk Mines. At
that time CDOH collected additional water samples. Information about the
results of these samples is available from Sandy Marek DOH, Water Quality
Control Division, 303-331-4759. During the Friday inspection trout were
still observed dying near the bridge at Weston.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 866-3567
