IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII /oc~ 5I13I2COZ 3-1
sss
rj1~: 3.0 RECLAMATION PLA N ~
This reclamation plan addresses rehabilitation of the Munger Canyon
Mine located in Garfield County, Colorado. The area is located in
a zone of transition between the regional ecosystems known as salt-
bush desert and pinyon-juniper woodland. Precipitation is about
10 inches annually and soils are derived primarily from sandstone
alluvium/colluvium. Although precipitation is low, soils are more
favorable for reclamation than the shale-derived soils of many
salt desert areas. Research and demonstration of reclamation in
salt desert has been reported in the works of McKell, VanEpps,
and coworkers in Utah. See McKell 1978, McKell et al. 1979, VanEpps
and McKell 1978, 1980, and Monsen and Plummer 1978. This work has
demonstrated the need for (1) use of adapted native species, (2)
planting live stock of woody plants because of severe problems in
direct seeding of same, and (3) attention to maintenance of favor-
able soil moisture through mulching, surface manipulation, and/or
limited irrigation.
Land uses prior to mining activity have been grazing (rangeland)
and wildlife habitat; the same land uses are proposed for the post-
mining landscapes (See Sections 4.1.2.1 through 4.1.2.3).
Sites to be reclaimed include the mine portal and facilities area
that portion of the haul road which was widened for mining activi-
ties, the new haul road added for mining operations, the waste rock
stockpile, and the sediment pond and topsoil storage area (Figure
3.1-1). Of the 29.2 acres to be reclaimed,/9.2 acres have been
e,. {,.Q ....I wctw rL
