MANAGEMENT
Bear's existing discharge permit provides for the discharge of mine water directly to the
North Fork of the Gunnison River through outfall 001. Therefore Bear was prepared to
handle the mine water discharge from the old B-Seam portal which emerged on
November 17, 1997.
On November 24"' Bear sent a letter to the Water Quality Control Division (WQCD)
requesting that its discharge permit be modified as follows:
1. Move outfall 001 about 1,000 feet downstream.
2. Approve the construction of a water treatment pond.
I spoke with Jon Kubic (WQCD) today regarding Bear's request for a permit
modification. He indicated the modification would be handled as a minor change and
might be approved within a week.
Enclosed for your records is a copy of Bear's letter to the WQCD. Please call if you
have any questions.
Sincerely,
toyer P.E.
J E. S
Consulting Engineer
cc: Bear Coal Company
