Disturbance and displacement of wildlife out of the
immediate vicinity of the pit will occur and there will be
a loss of habitat. Displacement will not have a severe
impact due to the availability of adjacent habitats. For
the same reason the loss of 40 acres o£ habitat will r.ot
have a substantial negative impact.
Reclamation of this site will be extremely difficult k~ecause
of the steep slopes resulting from the mining. Unfortunately,
the existing topography does not allow more gentle slcpes
in some cases. Wherever possible slopes should be shaped
to 3 to 1 or gentler. Because o£ the lack of top soil, nitro-
gen fertilizer will have to be applied to all disturbed areas.
Reseeding of native grasses and forbs with mountain mahogany
seed mixed in should be done in the late winter or early
spring. Seeding equipment should be run cross-slope and con-
tour furrows utilized to hold soil erosion to the minimum.
Natural reseeding of oak brush and coniferous trees should
be allowed to occur following reclamation. Grazing by live-
stock will have to be excluded from the reclaimed areas for
at least two years following reseeding. The waste materials
dump on the south side of the operations area will need to be
leveled somewhat. The steepness and looseness of the material
in its present state will cause accelerated erosion and not
allow reseeding to be successful.
~~
DEPARTM EN7 OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris Sherman, Executive Director • WILDLIFE COMAAISSION, Vernon C.
