At the
time of the purchase of the subject property by the
applicants, Area 4 had been approximately 1/2 mined and
was completed by the applicant approximately 4 years
ago. From approximately 1974 to November, 1977, the
applicant worked the area indicated as Area 5 and is
presently operating in the area noted as Area 6. The
mining of Area 6 will be completed in approximately one
year. Future extraction will then take place in
segments of approximately five (5) acres, going North
and then West on the parcel, the extraction of each
parcel of approximately five acres taking approximately
one and one-half (1-1/2) years.
The mining is generally done in the following steps:
(1). Topsoil and other soils covering the gravel deposit
are removed by earthmoving equipment. In most
cases removal of the soil is scheduled to precede
gravel removal closely to minimize surface distur-
bance. Some of the soil from mined areas is placed
directly in its final location in previously mined
areas according to the reclamation plan, thereby
minimizing handling costs and speeding reclamation
activities.
(2). Subsequently, gravel is excavated and removed to
the deepest level that can be mined economically.
Gravel deposits usually lie in more or less uniform
layers interspersed with pockets of clay, silt and
other usable materials. The gravel deposit is
removed with heavy earthmoving equipment.
(3). The following step is reclamation of areas which
have been disturbed by the excavation process in
order to re-establish soil productivity where this
is applicable and to make the area vailable for
future land use. The reclamation process for
previously worked areas takes place more or less
simultaneously with the mining operation on current
areas, i.e., mined areas are reclaimed while the
next areas are being prepared for mining and
mined. Using topsoil and other overburdened
removed prior to the mining process, the ground
surface in previously worked areas is shaped into
final contours to re-establish land forms or made
to utilize good growing soils to revegetate reclaimed
areas where this is appropriate. Equipment used
during the mining process is also used in reclama-
tion operations along with ground shaping equipment
and agricultural equipment used in revegetation.
EXHIBIT D
