I
understand that a representative from DMG has already visited the site for a pre-0peration inspection. I
am quite familiar with this area from previous tecern inspectiotss to other mining operation-c for
sandstone. i believe that the request to conduct extraction of sandstone has sm significant potential to
negatively impact wildlife or wildlife habitat.
The mining site is primarily ponderosa pine habitat and within the overall range ofblack bear,
mountain lion, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, and within the winter range of ellt, winter
concentration area for mule deer, and wintering ratrge and concentration area ofwhite-tailed deer.
Note this site is also located within a designated mountain lion human conflict area. Nurtterous raptor
species may potentially nest in the ponderosa pine trees and rocky cliff sides found on the property. The
mitring site is within a designated foraging area of peregrine falcon and the winter range of bald eagle.
Furthertnore, there is an activt bald eagle nest site nearby in the vicinity of Lyons, Cobrado. 1 suggest
that the applicant check all tttxs that are to be removed and rocky cliff areas to be mined for the presence
of raptor nests prior to mining such areas. if nests are found i recommend leaving intact all nest
structures and support stnrctures (trces, rocky outcrops, cliffs) and minimi~c disturbance to the area. 1
would like to request that the Division of Wildlife be coruatted immediately if the applicant dots locate a
raptor nest on the proposed mine site. In doing so, the Division of Wildlife can tlrerr successfully work
with the applicarn so as to m;nimin disturbance to both the mining operation and the wildlife and
wildlife habitat during the raptor breeding season.
Should you feel there might be wild Life related issues which [ern not aware of, please let me know and 1
w~l~ l1 make a site visa. As always, it is suggested thaz caze be taken during mining to avoid excess etnsion,
siltatioq or disturbance of more land than necessary to accomplish the project. i also suggest that the
area be reawnably reclaimed tolbwing mining and revegetated with appropriate native plarn species.
DEPARTMF.'NT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg Welrher, EzmJtive Uacaor
WQDLffE COMMISSION, Chuck Lewis, Chamnan • Merle Levalhy, Vice Chairman • Ranwd Bl9ck, Seaelary
Members: Marimma Raaopwla.
